Sri Lanka have produced one of the greatest run chases in one-day history. In the third match of the Pakistan ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi on 22 October 2026, they overhauled a target of 430 to beat England by two wickets with one ball left. Janith Liyanage settled it with a six over long-off, needing exactly that to finish the job. England captain Harry Brook had scored a record-breaking 202 earlier in the day, only to end up on the losing side.

The chase that nobody expected
England's total looked safe after Brook's double century, the fastest in ODI history. Sri Lanka had other ideas. They were 60 for 2 after ten overs, then kept the required rate within reach through the middle overs. Pavan Rathnayake was on 89 off 82 balls when the score reached 239 for 3 in the 33rd over, with Dasun Shanaka striking quickly alongside him. Liyanage then took over in the closing stages, hitting a mix of ramps, scoops and straight sixes against Sam Curran and the rest of England's attack to bring the equation down to a single hit.
Second-highest chase in ODI history
Chasing 430 and winning makes this the second-highest successful run chase in men's ODIs. Only South Africa's famous chase of 434 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 is higher. Sri Lanka's total also beat the 429 England had posted a few hours earlier, making 430 the highest ODI total ever recorded in Pakistan. The previous best in the country had stood for only the length of one innings.
Brook's 202 not enough
Brook's 202 came off 116 balls, and he reached 200 in 114, the fastest double hundred the format has seen. It was also the highest score by an England batter, by a non-opener, and by an England captain. Even so, the innings finished on the losing side. England's bowlers could not defend 429, a total that most teams would expect to win by a wide margin.
A huge match in numbers
Between them the two sides scored 859 runs in the match. England's innings was built on an opening stand of 74, a 159-run partnership between Brook and Root, and a 185-run stand off 77 balls between Brook and Will Jacks. Banton reached fifty for the fourth innings in a row, and Jacks hit a 25-ball half-century. All of it fell just short of what Sri Lanka's batting produced in reply.
What it means
The result is a big moment for Sri Lanka, who now have their first win of the tri-series after losing to Pakistan earlier. It leaves England without a point from two matches, having also lost to Pakistan by 87 runs on Tuesday. Pakistan, who have beaten both rivals, are in a strong position to reach the final. England will have to rethink their bowling plans quickly, since a record 202 from their captain still did not win them the match.
